The ESTEP Annual Event 2025 aimed at bringing together the European steel community to explore research and innovation in decarbonization, digitization, and circular solutions that will shape the sustainable future of the European steel industry.

The event was launched on the 28th of October with the visit to the Acciaierie Bertoli Safau (ABS) facilities and lasted till the October 30, hosted by the Biblioteca Rizzi of the Udine University.

Stefano Campanari– Professor at the Politecnico di Milano – gave the presentation “High-temperature electrolysis for decarbonisation of the steel sector: the SYRIUS Project, a real scale demonstration” and outlined the context and objective of the SYRIUS Project. The system was also described with the focus on the SOEC  electrolyser, which will be built by Baker Hughes utilizing SOEC stacks manufactured by ELCOGEN.

The SOE operates at high temperature (nearly 700°C) with high electrical efficiency (specific consumption below 39 kWh el /kg H2 ), and utilizes steam recovered from the steel reheating process.
